What is the normal BMI for women?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the healthy BMI range for adult women is the same as for men: between 18.5 and 24.9. However, female body composition has important characteristics worth knowing.

Women naturally have a higher percentage of body fat than men (between 20% and 25% is healthy in women, versus 10–20% in men). This is completely normal and necessary for hormonal and reproductive functions.

BMI during pregnancy: an important exception

During pregnancy, the standard BMI does not apply because weight varies naturally week by week. Doctors use specific gestational weight gain tables based on pre-pregnancy BMI.

If you are pregnant, consult your doctor or midwife to learn how much weight is healthy to gain during your pregnancy.

BMI and Menopause

During menopause, hormonal changes can redistribute body fat toward the abdomen, increasing cardiovascular risk even with a normal BMI. That is why in women over 50, waist circumference is an important complementary indicator (healthy: less than 88 cm in women).
