Does normal BMI change with age?

The official WHO ranges (18.5 to 24.9) apply to adults aged 18 to approximately 65. However, specialists recognize that in people over 65, a slightly higher BMI can be protective, being associated with greater muscle reserve and better recovery from illness.

BMI in adults over 60 years

From age 60 onwards, low weight and muscle loss (sarcopenia) are risks just as or more important than overweight. A BMI that is too low in older people is associated with greater frailty, falls, worse recovery from illness, and higher mortality.

That is why some studies suggest that in older adults, a BMI between 25 and 27 can be perfectly healthy and even protective.

What is more important than BMI in older adults?

Muscle strength, balance, and functional mobility are health indicators more relevant than BMI alone in older people. It is recommended to complement with waist measurement and muscle mass assessment.
